So some of you may have heard of this film and others probably have not...but this documentary was produced by Rikki Lake on maternity care in the U.S. and the tragic place it is today. There was a Preview showing of it here in Dallas this past weekend that I volunteered at ( with Austin in tow in my sling!) It was an incredible movie--and not just because I love all things BIRTH! The audience was filled with woman who had unnecessary interventions in their birth and in the end had outcomes they did not want and in the end left them grieving for the birth they had dreamed of. I know some say "oh but its only one day--they have many more years to live as a mom and be with their baby." But what i feel those people dont get is that the birth of a baby lives forever ingrained in moms mind...similar to her wedding day. All married women remember their wedding day so vividly...and for most women the day they give birth is even more vivid in their minds.
Thats why I feel so strongly about doing what I do as a doula...I want to help moms have a birth experience that they cherish forever--and that makes them feel proud of what they did. For some moms, if their birth goes wrong or awry for whatever reason, it has a strong effect on them as a mom. Studies actually show that postpartum depression is lower in those moms who have a doula because in most births WITH doulas, the births either go relatively as planned OR mom is educated enough to be so involved that she does not feel cheated no matter what the out come is.
SO the point of this movie is to show that women and families need to take back the gift of child birth and not allow it to become a business any more than it already has. Rikki lake was not some one I would have assume would produce a good movie about this--but she is passionate about child birth being a sacred thing for moms so she did a great job on this! Here is a link to the trailer...check it out!!
